As the trade deadline approaches, the Jets made a move to improve their offensive line. They acquired Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from the Chiefs in exchange for TE Dan Brown. Duvernay has not played since the 2019 season. He opted out last year due to Covid and he was inactive most of this season until recently. The surprising performance of Trey Smith as a rookie combined with their offseason additions of Joe Thuney and Kyle long created a log jam, which made Duvernay expendable. However, when on the field he can play and the Jets are getting a nice player. In 2019, Duvernay boasted a quality PA% of 3.37% and only allowed two sacks.
The Jets offensive line has actually been decent this year, but their one weak link was RG Greg Van Roten. Duvernay has played his entire career at RG and figures to take over the position at some point once he gets acclimated in NY. Adding him to the fold gives the Jets five solid to good offensive lineman across the board. Vera-Tucker has been good as a rookie, Fant and Moses are solid at the tackle spots, and McCovern has been one of the most improved offensive lineman in the NFL this season. It's rare you see a losing team with a young core trade for a veteran at the deadline, but they didn't have to lose any draft capital to do it, so this was a good move for the Jets.
