Week 18 Offensive Line Rankings

1/5/2022

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Previous Rank: 1) – The greatness of the Tampa Bay o-line was on full display vs. the Jets. Even with Antonio Brown’s shenanigans leaving the Bucs receiving corps thin, Brady was able to lead a comeback in the second half in large part because the Jets couldn’t touch him. This unit only allowed pressure on 11% of pass snaps. They’re almost certainly going to run away with the best PA% of any o-line this season regardless of what happens in week 18.
  2. New England Patriots (Previous Rank: 2) – The Patriots o-line had a dominant all-around game that likely would’ve put them back in the number one spot had they done it against a credible opponent. However, even against the Jags, this group deserves praise for helping the Pats rush for 181 yards on 5 YPC and only allowing two pressures the entire game.
  3. Dallas Cowboys (Previous Rank: 4) – It’s a good thing the Cowboys o-line has settled in as an elite pass pro unit because they aren’t doing much in the run game. Even Zach Martin was getting beat vs. the Cardinals. In pass pro, Smith looked a little rusty in his first game back from injury but trying to block Chandler Jones with an ankle that likely isn’t 100% is a tough task for anyone. Overall, this unit only allowed pressure on 10% of pass snaps and on the season have a PA% of 17.8%, second only to the Bucs.
  4. Philadelphia Eagles (Previous Rank: 3) – The Philly o-line took a step back vs. Washington. It wasn’t a great game for them in either phase, especially pass pro. They allowed pressure on nearly 35% of pass snaps. Landon Dickerson was the worst of the bunch as he allowed a team-high six pressures, and nobody in the group performed up to their standard in the run game.
  5. Los Angeles Rams (Previous Rank: 6) – The Rams o-line had all five starters start and finish an entire game for the first time since week 12, and they looked good in both phases, especially in pass pro where they only allowed pressure on 13% of pass snaps. They are top five in PA%, the least penalized o-line, and if they can stay healthy the rest of the way, the only thing holding this team back from a Super Bowl appearance will be the decision-making of Matthew Stafford.
  6. Los Angeles Chargers (Previous Rank: 7) – The Chargers o-line was missing Storm Norton and lost Corey Linsley early to a back injury. Despite being without two key guys and facing one of the best defenses in the league, they still managed to have one of their best games of the season. Those guys were missed in the run game as the Chargers had some trouble in that phase, but Herbert was able to have his way through the air in large part to this group only allowing two pressures the entire game.
  7. San Francisco 49ers (Previous Rank: 8) – The 49ers o-line was dominant as expected vs. the Texans. They got whatever they wanted in the run game while only allowing three pressures in the pass-game. If whoever they have at QB can just not mess things up, this o-line, led by Trent Williams, who is arguably the league’s best offensive lineman this season, will give the 49ers a chance to be competitive in any playoff game.
  8. Cleveland Browns (Previous Rank: 5) – The Browns have had back-to-back poor pass pro performances, and this time they don’t have the excuse of missing players due to Covid. Even their superstar guard Bitonio struggled as he had his worst game of the season allowing four pressures, and of course, James Hudson was out of his league as he failed miserably to slow down the future DPOY T.J. Watt. Watt had four sacks in the game, and Hudson was credited with allowing three.
  9. Kansas City Chiefs (Previous Rank: 9) – The Chiefs o-line had a solid outing vs. the Bengals, especially when you factor in all the turmoil at LT. Orlando Brown injured his calf during warmups and did not play. Lucas Niang got the start at LT in his place but was injured after only six snaps, and then Joe Thuney moved over from LG and finished the rest of the game at LT. The majority of the group held up in pass pro, but Trey Smith had some trouble as he allowed half of the group’s pressures with five. The Chiefs finally made an effort to really run it in this game, and the o-line helped the Chiefs go for 155 yards on 6.7 YPC.
  10. Buffalo Bills (Previous Rank: 12) – The Bills played the Falcons, and their o-line played well as expected, but if you’ve been following these rankings week to week, you know I don’t care to discuss the results of teams that play the Falcons so let’s take a macro look at this unit. The Bills o-line when they are healthy is one of the best pass-blocking units in the NFL. The problem is, they’ve had to use so many different lineups this season. This unit is at its best when Spencer Brown is at RT and Darryl Williams at RG. They’ve played eight games this season with those two at those spots, and in those games, they have a PA% of 17.7% which would be second-best in the NFL over the course of the entire season. Even with Boettger lost for the season due to an Achilles injury, this will be one of the top pass pro groups in the playoffs if Dawkins, Morse, Williams, and Brown are in the lineup, and Cody Ford is not in the lineup.
  11. Detroit Lions (Previous Rank: 11) – The one thing the Lions fans can look forward to is this offensive line playing next season with Ragnow back in the middle. They had another good game as they allowed pressure less than 10% of pass snaps. They were also decent in the run game. It’ll be interesting to see the Lions offense next season if they can get Goff more help at receiver because the o-line has the pieces in place to be very good next year.
  12. Indianapolis Colts (Previous Rank: 10) – We know this o-line can run-block, and they had another good game in that phase vs. the Raiders. However, if they are going to be more than one and done in the playoffs, this group is going to have to do better in pass pro. They allowed pressure on 37% of pass snaps with Glowinski especially struggling as he allowed half of the team’s pressures with six. The good news for this unit is Quenton Nelson is looking like his old self. He hasn’t allowed a pressure in his last four starts.
  13. Green Bay Packers (Previous Rank: 15) – I don’t know if the NFL has a position coach of the year, but if they do, it should go to Adam Stenavich, the Packers o-line coach. The Packers o-line played great vs. the Vikings, and it just doesn’t seem to matter that they are playing without four starters. GB was able to rush for 174 yards on 5.4 YPC behind this unit, and they were only pressured on 15% of pass snaps.
  14. Baltimore Ravens (Previous Rank: 14) – The Ravens loss to the Rams was sort of a microcosm of their season. They played hard, they’re well-coached, but ultimately, they fell short in large part due to injuries. This unit competed and were solid vs. a highly talented Rams front. They allowed three sacks which isn’t great, but they only allowed pressure on 20% of snaps which is good, and they helped pave the way for 165 rushing yards on 5.2 YPC.
  15. Arizona Cardinals (Previous Rank: 16) – The Cardinals o-line held up well against one of the league’s best pass-rushing teams in the Cowboys. They allowed pressure 22% of pass snaps and no sacks. Outside of Josh Jones, who allowed five pressures, the rest of the unit played well in pass pro. They didn’t play well in the run-game, but this is one of the weaker run-blocking groups in the league. Kyler’s legs can help camouflage it, but the main thing with this group is pass-pro, and if they can do a good job in that phase, they’ll have a chance to win in the playoffs.
  16. Denver Broncos (Previous Rank: 18) – The Broncos o-line bounced back after a disastrous performance the week before vs. the Raiders. They only allowed pressure on 12% of pass snaps and one sack. They struggled to run-block however, which greatly contributed to the team’s overall struggles to score points in the game.
  17. Tennessee Titans (Previous Rank: 20) – The Titans have been one of the worst pass pro o-lines this season, but they had a rare great game vs. a hot Dolphins defense that is one of the most aggressive blitzing teams in the league. They only allowed one pressure the entire game, and they paved the way for nearly 200 yards rushing. This was the Titans o-line best game of the season, and they put together another game like this one next week against an inferior Texans team, they have a great shot at being the number one seed in the AFC.
  18. Washington Football Team (Previous Rank: 13) – The Washington o-line has really struggled in pass pro of late and they did again vs. the Eagles. They allowed three sacks and pressure on 35% of pass snaps. This was the third time in their last four games that they’ve allowed pressure on more than 30% of pass snaps. Injuries have been the biggest problem for this group, they just haven’t been able to get consistent players starting week in and week out since the first half of the season.
  19. Jacksonville Jaguars (Previous Rank: 23) – Not a lot went right for the Jags in their blowout loss to the Pats, but the o-line did play well. They only allowed pressure on 12% of pass snaps and were solid in the run game. They've quietly put together three-straight quality outings, which makes you wonder why Lawrence isn’t able to play better.
  20. New York Jets (Previous Rank: 19) – The Jets o-line struggled in pass pro vs. the Bucs. They allowed pressure on 30% of pass snaps, and ultimately when their offense needed to convert through the air in the fourth quarter to ice the game, they couldn’t in large part due to Zach Wilson being under duress. However, they were dominant in the run game. The Bucs are an elite run defense, and the Jets were able to get whatever they wanted in the run game as they rushed for 150 yards on 5.8 YPC.
  21. Seattle Seahawks (Previous Rank: 27) – The Seahawks o-line had their best game of the year as they dominated in both phases. They only allowed pressure on 9% of pass snaps and paved the way for 265 yards rushing on 6.5 YPC. If only they could’ve gotten more performances like this throughout the course of the season.
  22. Miami Dolphins (Previous Rank: 28) – The league’s most improved o-line continued its streak of solid play vs. the Titans. They did a good job run-blocking and allowed pressure at a rate of 22%. The Dolphins might’ve been eliminated from playoff contention, but they should be proud of how they turned around the season and at the improvement of their o-line.
  23. New Orleans Saints (Previous Rank: 17) – It’s unclear whether Armstead or Ramczyk will be available for the Saints final game, but you’d have to imagine if they can go, they will, because the Saints will be playing for their playoff lives. If they can’t go, I don’t like the Saints chances because this o-line has been a disaster without them, and it was again vs. the Panthers. This o-line hasn’t allowed pressure at a rate of less than 25% since week 10.
  24. Atlanta Falcons (Previous Rank: 21) – The Falcons o-line really struggled in pass pro vs. the Bills. They allowed three sacks and pressure on 39% of pass snaps. Mayfield struggled again, as he has most of the year, allowing a team-high five pressures and one sack. McGary also struggled allowing four pressures and two sacks. This unit has allowed pressure at a rate higher than 28% every game since week 12.
  25. Chicago Bears (Previous Rank: 29) – Jason Peters was back in the lineup for the Bears, and it showed because their o-line played it’s best game since week 13, which was also the last full game Jason Peters played.
  26. Cincinnati Bengals (Previous Rank: 24) – The Bengals o-line hasn’t had a good pass-blocking game since week 12, and they struggled again vs. the Chiefs. They allowed pressure 27% of pass snaps and allowed two sacks. They didn’t fare much better in the run game either. At this point, the Benglals offense is thriving more in spite of this group in large part due to the brilliant play of their great young QB and an abundance of talented skill players.
  27. Minnesota Vikings (Previous Rank: 22) – The Vikings offensive line performed poorly in every way vs. the packers. They allowed pressure on 32% of pass snaps but were even worse in the run game. They only managed 27 yards rushing for the game, and Dalvin Cook, one of the game’s elite backs, only managed 13 yards on nine carries. With Cousins out of the lineup and their playoff hopes on the line, they needed this group’s best effort and instead got one of their worst performances of the season.
  28. Pittsburgh Steelers (Previous Rank: 30) – The Steelers o-line bounced back after a rough game the week before vs. the Chiefs. It wasn’t perfect as Moore struggled at LT but overall they only allowed pressure on 14% of pass snaps. However, it was this group’s run-blocking that really stood out. They’ve been one of the worst run-blocking o-lines in the NFL, but they played well in that aspect on MNF which led to Najee Harris rushing for 188 yards on 6.7 YPC.
  29. Houston Texans (Previous Rank: 25) – The Texans o-line was simply outmatched by a talented 49ers front. They allowed pressure on 36% of pass snaps and three sacks. Given their lack of talent due to all the injures, this was an expected result.
  30. New York Giants (Previous Rank: 26) – The Giants o-line has fallen back into the poor play they were known for in their past two games after a stretch of serviceable play. The Giants offensive game plan didn’t make much sense given the way the game went. They were beaten 29-3 and had 39 run snaps to just 17 pass snaps. Maybe the coaches saw the way the Giants o-line was struggling combined with the poor QB play and just decided the passing game just wasn’t a viable option. The Giants allowed pressure on 53% of pass snaps, the worst percentage of the week.
  31. Las Vegas Raiders (Previous Rank: 31) – The Raiders were able to keep their playoff hopes alive despite the poor play of their offensive line vs. the Colts. They didn’t do Derrek Carr any favors as they allowed pressure on 44% of pass snaps and three sacks. The right side of the line was the biggest problem as Leatherwood and Parker combined to allow two-thirds of the pressures and sacks allowed. They also struggled run-blocking.
  32. Carolina Panthers (Previous Rank: 32) – The Panthers o-line struggled yet again. They allowed pressure on 36% of pass snaps, and the left side was especially bad as Brady Christensen and Michael Jordan allowed a combined eight pressures. This unit has allowed pressure at a rate higher than 30% in four of their last five games despite Taylor Moton playing his best football of the season during that stretch.
